VE Day
This week, Squirrels have been learning about VE Day (Victory in Europe Day) and why it is such an important moment in history. The children explored what happened on the 8th May 1945, when people across the country celebrated the end of World War II in Europe. They enjoyed hearing about the different ways that people celebrated including having street parties, waving flags and singing and dancing!
Writing - Tidy: Prefix '-un'
In Writing, Squirrels have continued to read the beautifully illustrated book Tidy by Emily Gravett. This week, the children were introduced to the prefix '-un’ and discovered how it can change the meaning of words. For example, tidy becomes untidy, and happy becomes unhappy. The children had a great time creating their own “un-words” and using these in their own sentences!
Maths - Multiplication and Division: Recognise and Add Equal Groups and Making Arrays
This week in Maths, Squirrels have continued learning about multiplication and division. The children practised recognising and adding equal groups using dice . They also made arrays using counters to help them see how multiplication works. The children learnt the difference between rows and columns and how to line them up to show equal groups clearly.
History - Stories of Rulers: How Did Alfred the Great Rule?
This week in History, Squirrels have learnt more about Alfred the Great, one of England’s most famous rulers. The children discovered that Alfred the Great was not just brave in battle, he was also clever and fair. The children found out that he helped protect his people from Viking attacks, built schools so children could learn, and even helped make laws to keep everyone safe.
PSHE - Road Safety
In PSHE, the focus was on road safety - a very important topic. Squirrels learnt how to stay safe when walking near the road and they talked about how to behave near roads. The children discussed the importance of walking (not running), holding an adult’s hand, and keeping away from the edge of the pavement. To finish off, the children made colourful road safety posters with important safety messages to remind everyone how to stay safe outside.
Geography: Living by the Sea: Human and Physical Features
In Geography this week, Squirrels have continued their learning about living by the sea and extended this learning forward by identifying human features such as shops, hotels and arcades as well as physical features including headlands, pebbles and tides. The children looked at seaside photos and were able to sort the features into two groups.
Computing - Stop Motion Animation: Flipbooks
In Computing, Squirrels started their stop motion animation topic by making their very own flipbooks! The children drew simple pictures on small pages, each slightly different, and had fun flipping them quickly to watch their pictures move. It was a fantastic introduction to how animation works, and the children cannot wait to bring their stories to life on screen next!
