At Kidsgrove Primary School, we believe that Design and Technology is a vital subject that nurtures creativity, curiosity and problem-solving. Our DT curriculum enables children to design, make and evaluate purposeful products while developing practical skills that prepare them for an ever-changing world.

Through a wide range of hands-on projects, pupils learn how ideas become real. They explore materials, tools and mechanisms, and gain the confidence to take risks, test their thinking and learn from the process. Whether designing structures, learning basic cooking skills, creating moving mechanisms or exploring electrical systems, children develop resilience, innovation and independence.

Our DT lessons are rooted in real-life contexts so that learning feels meaningful and relevant. Children research existing products, plan their own designs, create prototypes and refine their final outcomes. They learn how functionality, aesthetics and user needs influence every design decision.

We also place strong emphasis on evaluating work—both their own and that of others. This reflective approach helps children understand how products are improved and how design impacts everyday life.

Across the school, pupils experience a rich variety of DT disciplines such as textiles, construction, food technology and mechanical systems. They also learn important life skills such as safe tool use, teamwork, following a design brief and adapting ideas when things don’t go as planned.

Our aim is for every child to leave Kidsgrove as a confident, capable and creative designer—someone who can think critically, solve practical problems and appreciate how design shapes the world around them.
