At Kidsgrove, we are committed to delivering a high-quality Mathematics curriculum that enables every child to become confident, competent and independent in their mathematical thinking. We want our pupils to develop strong number fluency, secure conceptual understanding and the ability to apply their skills in meaningful, real-life situations.
Our approach to maths supports children from their earliest experiences in the EYFS right through to Year 6. Learning is carefully sequenced so that pupils move from concrete resources to pictorial representations and, finally, to abstract methods. This ensures that children understand why maths works – not just how to complete a calculation. Vocabulary is taught explicitly, and children are encouraged to articulate their reasoning clearly and confidently through regular mathematical talk.
Across all year groups, pupils take part in practical exploration, guided discussions and problem-solving activities that stretch and challenge them. Daily arithmetic and number-fact practice build fluency, while retrieval activities help embed key knowledge in long-term memory. Teachers use ongoing assessment to identify gaps, address misconceptions and ensure all learners, including SEND and disadvantaged pupils, can access the same high-quality curriculum with appropriate support.
From counting and pattern-making in the Early Years, to formal written methods, fractions, geometry and statistics in Key Stage 2, our curriculum is designed to build secure knowledge year after year. Children learn to reason, justify answers and explain errors using precise mathematical vocabulary.
By the time they leave Kidsgrove, pupils are confident, resilient mathematicians who enjoy challenge, understand the importance of maths in everyday life and are well prepared for the next stage of their education. We strive to ensure that every child develops a positive attitude towards mathematics and the belief that they can succeed.
