At Kidsgrove, we believe that the best way to help pupils excel in English is to nurture them as lifelong, enthusiastic readers. Reading sits at the heart of our curriculum, and we are committed to fostering a genuine love of books from the very beginning of each child’s learning journey.

Children and staff at Kidsgrove are passionate about reading, and throughout the year we hold a wide range of whole-school events to inspire engagement and enjoyment. Reading is taught through Read Write Inc. phonics in the early stages and then through VIPERS reading lessons, which develop key skills in Vocabulary, Inference, Prediction, Explanation, Retrieval, and Summary. Through this structured approach, we aim not only to teach reading but to build readers.

Our teachers regularly recommend books to pupils to encourage reading for pleasure and to widen children’s experience of different genres and authors.

Reading for Pleasure at Kidsgrove

Our aim is to help every child become a lifelong reader by developing a deep enjoyment of reading. We provide a rich and varied curriculum that offers opportunities to explore a wide range of books and texts.

We actively promote the concepts of reading for fun, enjoyment, and pleasure, ensuring that reading is seen as something to celebrate.

How Kidsgrove Promotes Reading for Pleasure

  • Through VIPERS lessons, children explore rich vocabulary and take part in shared, echo, and choral reading to develop confidence and engagement.

  • Frequent Storytime sessions take place across the school to model expressive, fluent reading

  • Our Reading Ambassadors help support the younger children with fluency

  • We work closely with parents by ensuring every child has access to online books and quizzes through platforms such as Oxford Owl and Reading Buddy.

  • Teachers frequently share book recommendations to spark interest and introduce new authors.

  • We invite authors into school to speak about their work, and highlight the importance of reading in everyday life.

  • Reading is celebrated through special themed days—such as World Book Day—and by inviting parents to take part as mystery readers.
