Computing is one of the most important skills for modern life, and at Kidsgrove Primary School we want every child to become confident, creative and responsible users of technology. As the digital world continues to evolve, we aim to equip pupils with the knowledge and understanding they need to succeed both now and in the future.

Through our computing curriculum, children learn not only how to use technology effectively, but also how to do so safely, respectfully and responsibly. We ensure that every pupil develops a strong foundation in digital skills, computational thinking and problem-solving, while also understanding how technology impacts the world around us.

How We Teach Computing

We follow the Kapow Primary Computing scheme, which provides a clear, well-sequenced and engaging curriculum from Early Years to Year 6. This ensures that pupils build their knowledge progressively and revisit key concepts such as programming, digital literacy and online safety in increasingly sophisticated ways.

Through Kapow, children:

  • Learn to code using age-appropriate tools

  • Explore how computers and networks function

  • Develop digital literacy skills such as typing, data handling, multimedia creation and research

  • Use a wide range of software and hardware creatively

  • Build problem-solving, logical thinking and resilience

Lessons are practical, engaging and designed to give children hands-on opportunities to experiment with technology, test ideas and work collaboratively.

Technology in Our School

Kidsgrove is well-resourced with modern technology to support computing lessons and learning across the curriculum. This includes:

  • Class sets of iPads in KS1 and KS

  • A range of programmable toys, including BeeBots and other coding devices

  • Large touch-screen displays in every room for modelling, demonstrating and sharing pupil work

  • Access to online tools to support learning at school and at home

We also encourage the purposeful use of ICT in other subjects to enhance learning, reinforce computing skills and provide meaningful, real-world applications of technology.

Online Safety

Online safety is central to our computing curriculum. It is taught explicitly through Kapow and revisited throughout the year at appropriate times. Children learn how to:

  • stay safe online

  • recognise risks

  • protect their personal information

  • behave respectfully and responsibly

  • seek help if something worries them

We link online safety closely to our Kidsgrove school values, helping pupils understand the importance of respect—for themselves, others and the digital tools they use.

What Your Child Will Learn

By the time pupils leave Kidsgrove, they will:

  • Understand how to use computers, iPads and digital tools confidently and purposefully

  • Be able to design, write and debug simple programs

  • Use technology to create, organise, store and present information

  • Understand how networks, the internet and search technologies work at a basic level

  • Know how to stay safe and make responsible choices online

  • Apply digital skills across the curriculum and in real-life situations

  • Have a positive, responsible attitude towards technology
