At Kidsgrove Primary we believe that attending school regularly is one of the foundations of successful learning helping to prepare children for the world of education, work and adult life.
Why do we need to come to school?
- It’s the law.
- Being part of a group helps us to get on well with others, form relationships and make friends.
- To be part of and enjoy educational visits and they help us to learn about the world outside of school.
- Taking part in clubs and teams is fun and helps us to play and work together and improve what we do.
- Being at school every day improves your chances of getting a job or going to college and university when you get older. It provides you with valuable life skills.
- Stops you from being bored.
- It could help you have better quality sleep at night because you have been active and busy.
- To learn new things and extend my knowledge on things I already know.
What happens if you don’t come to school?
- Children don’t learn as well and will get behind with their learning.
- Your parents could get in trouble for not sending you to school.
- You might get bored at home and lose interest in some of the things that make you happy.
- You won’t get to see your friends.
- You will be missing out on opportunities to try and enjoy new things that you didn’t know you would like or things that will develop your confidence.
- You don’t get to make as many friends.
- You miss out on special days, celebrations, educational visits, school clubs and team events.
What is Good Attendance?
Good attendance at school is 95%. If your attendance is below 95% our Educational Welfare Support may contact you to discuss how we can help you improve your child’s attendance.
- 98% attendance means 4 school days missed
- 95% attendance means 10 school days missed
- 90% attendance means 19 school days missed
- 80% attendance means 38 school days missed
Good attendance at school is vital if children are to achieve their full potential. If they are not in school, they are not learning.
- The habit of being a regular, punctual attender at school will stand your child in good stead for the future, particularly in the world of work.
- If your child’s attendance drops below 95% you will be invited into school, so we can support you to improve their attendance. If it drops further, you will be formally invited, as we must work together to get every child in school every day and on time, to maximise their learning.
- If your child arrives after 9:00am they will be marked as late. This is in line with our Attendance Policy and Procedures. Poor attendance (and punctuality) not only impacts on a child’s progress and achievement but also on their self-esteem and well-being.
All children can arrive at school from 8.40am until 9am. The official register is taken at 9am and all children must be in their classroom to get a mark in the register. Children who arrive after this time will be marked as late. If your child arrives after 9:30am it will be recorded as unauthorised whole absence for the morning session.
How parents can help get their children to school everyday
- Talk regularly with you child about school and how they feel about it. Children are more likely to attend school if they feel supported by you and their worries are listened to and talked about.
- Praise them when they come into school, ask them what they have done today, show them you are interested - all praise is GOOD!
- Only allow your child days off school for genuine illness. Days off for anything other than genuine illness will not be authorised unless there are exceptional circumstances.
- You MUST phone school as soon as possible to tell us why your child is absent before 9am daily. Save the school number in your phone – this will save you time, 01782 973970.
