Summer 1, Week 2
Writing - Tidy
This week in writing, Foxes have used and developed their research skills to create a fact file all about badgers. Focussed around the main character, Pete the badger in our class text, the children used conjunctions to justify his behaviour within the story and the impact his actions could have on the other animals in the forest. Using Pete as inspiration, the children completed their own independent research focussing on where badger's live, what badger's eat, where badger's live and any other interesting facts. The children applied their skills of focus including apostrophes for contraction, expanded noun phrases and suffixes to add further detail.
Taking inspiration from our class story where the main message is centred around keeping the environment clean and tidy, some children decided to pick litter up from our playground. It was so beautiful to see the care and thoughtfulness of each child taking part who are doing their small part in helping our precious Earth.
History - The Stone Age
In history this week, Foxes class have explored the term 'hunter-gatherer'. Understanding that this term referred to how people living in the Stone Age sourced their food, the children sorted pictures of animals, fruits, vegetables and seeds to determine if these were hunted for or gathered. With live animals being hunted with sharp tools and foods that could be picked or found being gathered, the children used their new knowledge to answer a range of questions where they were all able to give specific examples.
Geography - Weather in our World
This week in geography, Foxes have explored the different between climate and weather. Learning that the weather is the day-to-day conditions and changes in the atmosphere and climate is the average weather condition over a period of time, the children focussed on the six major climate zones. From polar to tropical, arid to mediterranean and temperate to mountainous, the children explored the key features of each climate zone and countries that could be found within each and how their location when compared to the Equator impacts upon this.
RE - Beginnings and Endings
In RE this week, Foxes have learnt about a traditional Muslim ceremony held to welcome a new baby. Usually held on the 7th day after a babies birth, an Aqiqah focussed on introducing friends and family to the new addition whilst also emphasising the importance of being kind to those who are not as fortunate. The children explored special meanings behind different traditions seen during these ceremonies and used their learning to create a guide that shares more about this unique event.
DT - Making a Moving Monster
Continuing with their work around mechanisms, in DT this week, Foxes class have created their very own linkage system. Experimenting with strips of cards cut to different lengths and widths, the children used split pins to create their own linkages which will form the main structure of their moving monster. From simple linkages to more complex linkages with multiple moving parts, the children showed excellent determination and were all very successful in creating their mechanism.
