Through our curriculum, we aim to nurture a lifelong appreciation of music and give every child the opportunity to discover their own musical talents.

Music brings our school community together. Whether singing, playing instruments, composing, or listening to music from different cultures and time periods, children learn to appreciate the power of music as a universal language.

How We Teach Music

We use the Kapow Primary Music scheme to deliver high-quality, engaging and progressive music lessons across the school. This structured approach ensures all pupils experience a broad and balanced music curriculum.

Through Kapow, children:

  • Take part in practical, hands-on music making each week.

  • Build musical skills progressively in listening, composing, performing and appraising.

  • Learn to sing with confidence and expression.

  • Use tuned and untuned instruments to explore rhythm, pitch, tempo and dynamics.

  • Listen to and appreciate music from a wide variety of genres, cultures and historical periods.

  • Develop their musical vocabulary, learning to describe, discuss and evaluate music accurately.

  • Work collaboratively, building teamwork and ensemble skills.

Lessons incorporate games, singing, movement and creative exploration, ensuring music is fun, active and accessible for all learners.

What Your Child Will Learn

Across the school, children will:

  • Sing confidently, showing control of pitch, breathing and expression.

  • Play instruments, both tuned and untuned, with increasing accuracy and fluency.

  • Compose and improvise short musical pieces using rhythm and pitch patterns.

  • Use musical vocabulary to describe elements such as tempo, dynamics, timbre, duration and structure.
