At Kidsgrove Primary School, the teaching of Spanish is about far more than learning vocabulary and grammar. We aim to inspire a love of languages and give children the confidence, curiosity and enthusiasm to continue learning languages long after they leave us. Learning a foreign language helps pupils develop an understanding of cultures beyond their own and builds the foundations for becoming respectful, open-minded global citizens.
Studying Spanish gives children valuable communication skills and strengthens their understanding of how language works. Through enjoyable and interactive lessons, pupils grow in confidence, develop accurate pronunciation and learn to express themselves in a new and exciting way.
How We Teach Spanish
To provide high-quality language teaching, we use the Primary Language Network, which offers a clear, structured and engaging approach to learning Spanish from Year 3 to Year 6.
Through this approach:
-
Children take part in lots of oral rehearsal, helping them become confident speakers.
-
Lessons include songs, stories, actions and games to build strong recall.
-
Vocabulary and grammar are introduced in small, manageable steps.
-
New language is revisited regularly to ensure it “sticks.”
-
Pronunciation and intonation are modelled carefully and practised often.
-
Spanish culture is woven throughout the curriculum, helping children understand traditions, festivals and everyday life in Spanish-speaking countries.
Our aim is to create a positive, supportive environment where children feel confident having a go and enjoy learning to communicate in another language.
