Writing - My Name is Not Refugee

This week in their Writing lessons, Squirrels independently wrote their own diary entries in the role of the character from the book that they had been focusing on this half term. The children were so proud of their writing and the Year 1 team is so proud of the progress that they have made!

Science: Plants

This week, Squirrels had their final lesson in their Science topic all about plants. The children looked back at everything they had learnt, including the different parts of a plant and tree, what plants need to grow healthy and strong and the difference between wild plants and garden plants as well as the difference between deciduous and evergreen trees. In their last lesson, the children checked in on their seedlings and were amazed at how much they had grown!

Computing - Coding: Scratch Junior

This term in Computing, Squirrels have been learning how to code using Scratch Junior. The children explored how to make characters move, jump and change direction. They also added speech bubbles so that their characters were able to say "hello". Additionally, the children learnt how to create our own little animations using the coding blocks. Squirrels enjoyed using the iPads to create their codes and some of their characters danced, moved across the screen, or even disappeared like magic!

Geography: Seasonal Changes

This week, Squirrels had their final lesson in their Geography topic all about seasonal changes. The children looked back at everything they had learnt about the different kinds of extreme weather including droughts, flooding, hurricanes and blizzards. The children were able to show their learning by independently completing a leaflet.

History: Stories About the Past

Also, this week Squirrels had their final lesson in their History topic all about stories from the past. The children looked back at the three different stories that they had learnt about this half term and were able to complete a leaflet to show what they could remember for each story.

Art and Design: Colour Splash - Clarice Cliff Plates

This week in Art and Design, Squirrels learnt about Clarice Cliff, one of the most famous ceramic artists of the 20th century. The children discovered that she was known for her colourful, geometric patterns and designs and how she was able to turn everyday plates into pieces of art. The children enjoyed having the opportunity to create their own Clarice Cliff-inspired plates!

PE: Sports Coaches

Over the last couple of weeks, a sports coach has visited the children and showed them a range of games and activities that they can play to help move their bodies! Squirrels have played running games, learnt new throwing and catching skills, and had lots of fun. The children love their visits from the sports coaches and cannot wait to carry on improving their ability.

RE - Beginnings and Endings: The Easter Story

In RE this week, Squirrels listened to the Easter Story and the children learnt about what happened on each day. Then, the children worked together in small groups to put the events from the story into the correct order.

Easter Activities

Squirrels had a lovely time celebrating the end of the Spring term with a day full of fun, creativity, and a little bit of chocolate! The children had a wonderful time getting into the Easter spirit with a range of exciting activities from making Easter cards, to creating Easter puppets and then finishing the day with an Easter egg hunt! The children have been stars this term, and the day was a lovely way to celebrate all their hard work. A big thank you for your continued support throughout the term and we hope you have a lovely break. Happy Easter from all of us in Year 1 Squirrels!
