This week in Nursery, we've had an exciting start to our new topic on Transport as part of our Understanding the World focus. The children have been thoroughly engaged and are becoming confident using the word transport, recognising it as our learning focus. They've impressed us with their ability to name lots of different types of transport and talk about where they go!

"Transport is a racing car it can go super fast" -Derren

"transport is moving- a car, a hot air balloon" -Matilda

"boat is transport, it swims in the water" -Erica

"I have been on a plane, train, ferry. Ferry goes on a river" -Esmeray

"train go on track" -Finley

"we have been learning about transport, a motorbike" -Holly

"car it has 4 wheels, it drive on road" -Vinnie

In Literacy, we introduced the wonderful book "You Choose" which was the perfect story to launch our topic. It encouraged the children to think independently and make their own choices—where they might like to travel and what form of transport they would use to get there. We had lovely discussions about how everyone’s choices can be different, and that’s absolutely okay.

For our creative activities, the children made their very own cars using paper plates. They independently chose their paint colours and the shapes they wanted to use—circles, squares, rectangles, and triangles—while we talked about the shape of wheels. It was fantastic to see their creativity and learning come together in their finished vehicles!

We also used our fine motor skills to mark make on maps, thinking about how transport travels and where it might go. The children added their own imaginative marks, such as waves in the sea, and then created their own maps of places they'd like to visit. It was wonderful to hear their ideas and see their confidence grow as they talked about journeys they’ve experienced themselves during this focus activity.

In Maths, we developed our counting skills by adding passengers onto the bus. The children worked hard to recognise numbers and count out the correct number of passengers, with some even challenging themselves to count higher! They really enjoyed this hands-on activity and showed great number awareness.

It’s been a busy week filled with exciting learning opportunities. Our new role play area, set up as a travel agents, has been a big hit, as has the small world airport. The children also loved exploring water play with boats, making tracks through paint with different vehicles, and working together to build train tracks—fantastic for encouraging social interaction and teamwork.

We’re so proud of how well the children have settled back in and embraced our new topic with such enthusiasm. We can’t wait to see where our learning takes us next!
