Writing - Tidy
In Writing this week, the children have been inspired by the story 'Tidy' by Emily Gravett. The children thought about how Pete the badger worked hard to keep his forest clean and then wrote thoughtful letters nominating Pete for the Tidy Forest Award, describing his actions and explaining why he deserves it. The children have been learning how to structure a letter and they did a fantastic job!
Maths - Multiplication and Division: Doubles and Making Equal Groups by Grouping and Sharing
In Maths, the children have explored doubling numbers using tens frames and counters and even their own hands! Then, the children moved on to making equal groups by grouping and sharing objects fairly. They used counters, cubes, and real-life examples such as fruit to make their learning practical and fun.
Science - Everyday Materials: Melting and Freezing
This week in Science, the children investigated melting and freezing! Squirrels carried out exciting experiments to see what happens to ice cubes when they are left out, and they even melted chocolate to see how it changes. The children learnt new vocabulary including solid, liquid, melt and freeze and they were fascinated to discover how temperature can change the different materials.
Geography - Living by the Sea: How is Land Around a Coastline Used?
This week in Geography, the children have been learning all about how land is used around the coastline. We looked at photos, maps, and videos to explore different coastal areas. The children discovered that coastal land can be used for piers, hotels, eateries, golf courses, parking and beaches. The children compared busy seaside towns with quiet beaches and talked about how people live and work by the sea. To finish their learning, the children discussed why these attractions can be found on a coastline and they learnt that they help to bring in tourists (a person who visits a place for fun, a holiday or to learn new things).
RE - Ceremonies: Bar and Bat Mitzvahs
This week in RE, the children have learnt about Bar and Bat Mitzvahs, important ceremonies in the Jewish faith. The children explored how Jewish boys and girls prepare for this special day and what it means to become a responsible member of the community. The children were respectful and curious, asking thoughtful questions and reflecting on their own experiences with special occasions.
Design and Technology: Making a Moving Monster - Pivots, Linkages and Levers
In Design and Technology, Squirrels have started a new topic where they are going to continue with their learning about mechanisms from the Spring term. This week, the children have explored two types of mechanisms called levers and linkages. The children discovered that levers turn on a single pivot and linkages are a system of connected levers. With their new learning, the children identified which type of mechanism was being used in a range of everyday items such as a door handles, window wipers, see-saws and scissors.
