Summer 1, Week 3

Science - Exploring Materials

This week in science, Foxes have learnt all about the melting process. Discussing what 'melting' is and how this can be reversed by freezing, the children acted as particles in an ice cube and how they react when heated up. Understanding that solid particles gain energy when heated up to create a liquid, the children drew solid and liquid particles to show their learning and sorted different objects based on if they do or do not melt.

''Ice is solid and water is a liquid. Water can freeze back into ice.'' - Pavel

''The particles get lots of energy and can move more.'' - Angel

History - The Stone Age

In history this week, Foxes have explored cave paintings in the Stone Age. Using our new piece of vocabulary 'pre-historic', the children were able to identify that cave paintings were used as humans could not yet write. Discussing similarities and differences between different cave paintings, the children had the opportunity to create their very own artwork inspired by this common pre-historic practice. The children were also able to show their knowledge in an end of lesson quiz where they they all showed fantastic recall and understanding of their new learning.

Geography - Weather in our World

This week in geography, Foxes have learnt all about tropical climates. Exploring the features of a tropical climate including where this zone is located in relation to the Equator, the temperature and conditions, the children created fact files to show their learning and drew pictures to represent the information.

''Tropical places are hot but have lots of rain.'' - Ariella

''Plants can grow because there is light and rain to keep them healthy.'' - Brogan

DT - Making a Moving Monster

In DT this week, Foxes have designed their own moving monster faces. Thinking about the mechanisms created last week, the children discussed how these will be improved upon to create monsters that have different moving parts. The children followed a design brief to plan two different designs which will be used to create the end product next week.

Writing - Tidy

This week in writing, Foxes have worked together to write a letter all about keeping the environment clean and tidy. Following the success criteria of using contracted words, '-er' and '-est' suffixes and subordination, the children used simple sentence starters to write their own piece, making sure to share ideas and work alongside others within the class. This was a super start to our letter writing, where the children will have the opportunity to write their own independent piece next week.

RE - Ceremonies

Continuing to learn about important ceremonies in different religions, this week in RE, Foxes explored a ceremony important in Judaism. Learning about Bar Mitzvah's and Bat Mitzvah's, the children discovered the differences between these two ceremonies being that Bar Mitzvah's are young men and Bat Mitzvahs are young women. The children learnt about the key preparation before these events can be held which include reading the Torah at home and in the Synagogue as well as organising a celebratory party for after the ceremony.
