This week, for our Understanding the World focus, Nursery have been learning about "caring for our world". We focused this around superheroes and how we can be a "caring superhero". The children have read the story "Supertato" by Sue Hendra & Paul Linnet.
"We read super potato, he was kind. A good character" -Vinnie
"Supertato helped his friends, so always help your friends" -Jasmine
"Supertato is kind like nurses" -Erica
This week we had lots of discussion around how to be a good friend, a caring superhero and different feelings. The children began by creating their own superhero mask after being read the story which they loved it. Afterwards we had lots of circle times where lots of important conversations were sparked. The children also explored different feelings and why you can feel that way, as it can be challenging to explain a situation where you might feel sad or angry, so we had lots of conversations and stories to put these feelings into context. The children then had a great understanding and were able to explain situations and how they felt. The children then got to explore face drawing by showing how a person may feel through how their face looks when they draw it.
On Monday, we had a huge focus in the hospital role play area. As we discussed how nurses are "caring superheroes" and this also allows us to celebrate International Nurses Day. We spoke about what nurses do and what you might see or do at the hospital/doctors. It was lovely to watch the children re-enact what they think happens and is said in a hospital!
"She hurt her leg, she needs our help" -Hope
"Message for the hospital, there has been an emergency" -Erica
"You always have to wear gloves, remember" -Jasmine
"Let me listen to your heart" -Aurora
In Maths, children were making patterns, with colours or different objects. The children are now very good at creating and following patterns. There next step will be to notice and correct an error in a repeating pattern which can be tricky!
In the provision, the children had lots of activities set, from junk modelling to promote recycling, building hospitals, dressing up as superheroes and threading activities. The children also had a cutting activity where they had to use their cutting skills to follow the dotted line to the superhero, some children are very confident using scissors, some made some lovely snips and others made an amazing progress during the time, shown over the 5 lines! To be a caring superhero we also wanted to help the animals, so we made bird feeders to hang from our playground tree, we hope they enjoy them!
