Summer 1, Week 1

Welcome back!

The sun has been out to shine for the first week of the Summer term. The children have all shown a fantastic approach to their learning and enjoyed a very much deserved afternoon in the glorious weather.

Writing - Tidy

In writing this week, Foxes have started to explore a new text. 'Tidy' is a book centred around keeping the environment clean and how this can affect other animals in nature. Focussing on aspects which can make our planet untidy such as littering, the children explore common litter items that can be found such as food wrappers and plastic bottles. Using adjectives to describe these items and the effects on the environment, the children wrote descriptive captions using '-er' and '-est' suffixes to create comparisons between each.

Maths - Fractions

This week in maths, year 2 Foxes have continued with their work all about fractions. Progressing from recognising and creating equal groups, the children learnt all about halves and how these can be represented as a fraction. From recognising a half to finding halves of pictures and numbers, the children applied their learning in a variety of fluency, reasoning and problem solving questions.

RE - Ceremonies

To begin their new topic all about different ceremonies, Foxes class explored their own experience with different ceremonies and how these can all have a different purpose. Learning to define what a ceremony is, the children had the opportunity to discuss ceremonies that they have witnessed or been involved in and elements within these. From the names of these ceremonies such as weddings, swimming presentations and christenings to clothes worn and activities at each, the children drew pictures of ceremonies that they have attended alongside writing a short description about their experience.

DT - Making a Moving Monster

In DT this week, Foxes class have continued to explore mechanisms. Extending their learning about mechanisms from the Spring term, the children explored two types of mechanisms called levers and linkages. Understanding that levers turn on a single pivot and linkages are a system of connected levers, the children identified which type of mechanism is used in a range of everyday items such as a door handles, window wipers, see-saws and scissors.

Spelling - Adding the suffix '-ment'

In spelling this week, Foxes class have focussed on successfully adding '-ment' to the end of words. Learning that no changes were needed to the root word and the suffix could simply be added to the end, the children applied their learning to a variety of vocabulary as well as correcting words where their suffix had been used or spelt incorrectly.
