Science - Plants: Common Trees
This week in Science, squirrels have been looking at different common trees. First, the children learnt the names of some common trees including what grows on them and what their leaves look like.
"An oak tree has big, wavy leaves and grows acorns - Jenson
"A horse chestnut tree has shiny brown conkers in the autumn" - Anastasia
"A sycamore tree has pointy leaves and grows helicopter seeds" - Grace
"A scots pine tree has long, thin leaves and it grows pinecones" - Oliver
Then, the children went outside to try and spot the common trees.
PSHE - Citizenship: Looking After Pets
This week in PSHE, Squirrels learnt how to look after pets. Pets need lots of care, just like people do. The children talked about different pets, including dogs, cats, rabbits, fish and hamsters. The children learnt that pets need food to stay strong and fresh water to drink. Pets also need a warm, comfy place to sleep, lots of exercise and vet visits to stay healthy. To finish, the children each chose a pet and drew three things that their pets needs everyday and three things that they should never feed their pet.
Geography - Seasonal Changes: Snow
This week in Geography, Squirrels have been learning all about snow and how it can affect different places in the world. The children looked at the UK (where they live!) and Alaska, which is a very cold place in North America. The children learnt that in the UK, snow does not fall very often but when it does, schools might close and public transport might be cancelled. However, in Alaska, snow falls for many months because it is much colder. In Alaska, people can still go to school and work because they are more prepared as the roads are cleared using snow ploughs and some people might use sled dogs or snowmobiles to travel.
Art and Design - Colour Splash: Colour Shades
In Art and Design this week, the children have explored light and dark shades of colours! They mixed white with colours to make them lighter and black to make them darker. To show their learning, the children used a hand print to paint each finger a different shade and then used these shades of colour to add their own patterns to the palm of the hand.
Mother's Day
This week, the children have also celebrated their favourite ladies in their lives. Squirrels have celebrated Mother's Day by creating their own cards, and they talked about the importance of the day and how it can be used to say thank you to the people who matter most in their lives. As they shared the reasons why they love their special someone, the children thoughtfully made cards for their mums, nannas, aunties, cousins, and sisters. I hope everyone had a wonderful day with their loved ones!
