Writing - My Name Is Not Refugee

This week in Writing, Squirrels have tried different foods from around the world. Thinking about the different foods that the refugee in our story would be able to try, the children sampled some of these and described their taste with adjectives. Trying poppadom, kiwi, marmalade and hummus, the children did a super job at trying the different foods and were even able to rate them out of 5! Continuing with this writing opportunity, the children were able to write sentences describing their most and least favourite food that they had tried, and they were even able to explain their choices using 'because'. After finishing the story, the children were able to order the events of the book using a story board.

Maths - Measurement: Length and Height

This week in Maths, Squirrels have been exploring measurement, focusing on length and height. The children started by learning the difference between the two: length – how long or short something is. Height – how tall or short something is. Then, the children used non-standard units such as cubes to measure different objects that they could find within the classroom. The children were able to compare these objects using words including longer, shorter, taller and smaller. Also, the children measured their own heights and even found out who was the tallest in the class! To finish their learning, the children learnt how to use a ruler to measure different objects. The children had to line up the object with 0cm on the ruler. Then, read the number where the object ends and use centimetres (cm) to record the measurement.

Science - Plants: Parts of a Tree

In Science, Squirrels looked closely at trees and learned about their different parts – roots, trunk, branches and leaves. The children learnt that each part has a very important job. The roots grow underground and help the tree stay strong and take in water. The trunk is the strong, woody part that holds the tree up. The branches grow out from the trunk and hold the leaves, flowers, or fruit. The leaves help the tree to make food using sunlight. Then, the children created beautiful tree diagrams and labelled each part.

PSHE - Citizenship: Similar, Yet Different

This week in PSHE, Squirrels have been recognising ways in which we are both the same as and different from other people. The children had some wonderful discussions about what makes them special and unique while also celebrating what they have in common with their friends. The children shared things they love including pets, favourite foods, and hobbies and discovered that even though we are all different, we all belong! The children then drew themselves and wrote about their hair colour, eye colour, favourite food and colour before doing the same for their partner sitting next to them. The children were able to see what they have in common with their friends and also what is different.

Geography - Seasonal Changes: Extreme Wind

This week in Geography, Squirrels have been continuing their learning all about seasonal changes, with a special focus on extreme wind. The children talked about how the weather changes in each season and how wind can be gentle (a breeze) or strong (a storm). They learnt about extreme wings including hurricanes and strong winter storms. The children were amazed at how powerful wind can be!  To finish the learning, the children discussed how people can stay safe in strong winds and what things might be blown away!

Art and Design: Colour Splash

Today in Art, Squirrels have had the opportunity to use Lego and paint to create their very own prints. The children used their previous learning to mix primary colours to form secondary colours, before they used these colours alongside a range of different shaped Lego pieces, to create a unique print focussing on applying the correct amount of paint and experimenting with patterns.

Red Nose Day 2025

To end the week, Squirrels celebrated Red Nosed Day! The children dressed in red and took part in fun activities throughout the day. The children's favourite activity was creating their own red nose design! Thank you for your donations and support – we loved raising money for charity.
