This week the children have been learning about plants in their Understanding the World focus. They have developed their knowledge around the parts of a plant, a life cycle and what it needs to grow.

To support their learning, they were introduced to the story ‘The Tiny Seed’ by Eric Carle. Children studied the artist and created their very own artwork in the style of Eric Carle.

The children really enjoyed learning about what a seed needs to grow and the important role played the birds and butterflies.

‘The bird carry the seeds, the wind carries the seeds, that makes more flowers grow’- Nancie

‘The seed needs sunlight and soil, it needs water from the rain to survive’- Chloe

‘The grow in the Spring and Summer because its warmer, if its too cold the seed wont survive’- Amara

The children enjoyed transforming out outdoor area- by planting their very own seeds.

‘We have to put the seed in the soil’- Harley

‘Water it!’- William

Watch the seedling grow!’- Poppy

‘It’s a flower’- Cody

Children used their phonics knowledge and applied it to their writing as they practise their caption and sentence writing.

The children have enjoyed reading nonfiction books and stories around the life cycle of a plant and they can really articulate their knowledge of their science learning this week.

In maths, children have been applying their knowledge of composition to numbers 9 and 10. They have been securing their knowledge of numbers 1-10 through subitising and recognising patterns in numbers. They became investigators as they searched for 9 and 10 totals around their learning environment.
