Writing - My Name Is Not Refugee
In Writing, Squirrels continued their learning all about their focus story "My Name Is Not Refugee". To start the week, the children used their five senses to describe one of the places that the refugee had travelled to. Using their senses, the children were able to write sentences describing what it would be like to sleep outside. Then, the children wrote a welcome message for a refugee. The children included different things that they thought would make a refugee feel happy and safe.
Maths - Place Value within 50
This week in Maths, Squirrels have been working hard to understand place value within 50. The children started by counting forwards and backwards to 50, using number lines and hundred squares to help them. The children have become very confident in spotting missing numbers and recognising patterns. Next, the children explored how numbers are made up of tens and ones. They used base ten blocks, cubes and tens frames and counters to show how, for example, 32 is made up of 3 tens and 2 ones.
Science - Plant Life Cycle
In Science, for British Science Week, the children have been learning about how plants grow! They discovered that all plants start as tiny seeds and need water, sunlight, and soil to grow into strong, healthy plants. The children learnt that after planting a seed in the soil, the roots will start to grow before they turn into shoots. Then, as the shoot continues to grow, it will begin to grow leaves and a longer stem. This is called a seedling. The children also discovered that flowers help create new seeds, starting the cycle all over again! To finish the lesson, the children had a look at their plants that they had planted at the start of the term. The children were able to identify what stage in the life cycle their plants were. Have a look at how much they have grown!
History - Stories About The Past: The Gunpowder Plot
In History, Squirrels learnt about the famous Gunpowder Plot! The children found out that Robert Catesby and his friends, including Guy Fawkes, tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament. However, the King's guards found the gunpowder in the cellar and were able to stop the plan just in time. To finish their learning, Squirrels talked about why we still remember this event today with fireworks and bonfires every year on the 5th of November.
Geography - Seasonal Changes: Flooding
This term, Squirrels have been exploring how the weather changes with the seasons. This week, the children learnt that too much rain can sometimes cause flooding. The children looked at pictures of different floods in places such as the UK and Italy and talked about how floods can affect people and animals. They also discussed ways people try to stay safe when there is a lot of rain.
Art and Design - Colour Splash
In Art this week, Squirrels have continued to explore painting with primary and secondary colours. Focussing on the artist Jasper Johns, who created a piece of artwork using painted numbers, the children applied their learning of colour mixing to create their own piece of artwork. Using primary colours first before adding secondary colours, the children experimented with texture and patterns to create unique designs.
Happy Hooves Experience
Squirrels had a very exciting day where they all enjoyed their visit from 'Happy Hooves'! The children were able to meet a range of animals from llamas, goats, chickens, and rabbits. They had a fantastic time learning all about these friendly animals and how to take care of them.
