World Book Day 2025
Squirrels have had the best time celebrating World Book Day! The children loved dressing up as their favourite book characters and all of their costumes looked amazing. Also, they enjoyed sharing stories and doing fun activities all about our focus story 'Handa's Surprise'.
For World Book Day, Squirrels focused on the wonderful story Handa's Surprise by Eileen Browne, which brought the children to an exciting African village filled with amazing animals and delicious fruits. Handa's Surprise tells the story of a young girl named Handa, who carries a basket full of seven delicious fruits to visit her friend Akeyo. As Handa walks through the village, different animals sneak into her basket and take the fruits one by one. When Handa arrives at her friend's house, she gets a big surprise!
To connect with the setting of the story, the children explored African patterns and created their own beautiful artwork. The children looked at some traditional African designs and then used bold colours and paint to create their own patterned designs. The children were so creative, and the artwork turned out amazing!
After reading Handa's Surprise, the children were able to try some of the tropical fruits Handa carried in her basket! They tasted fruits including mango, passion fruit, and pineapple. It was so much fun to try these new flavours, and the children loved sharing their thoughts on each fruit. It was a great way to bring the story to life and learn more about different fruits from around the world.
Pancake Day 2025
Happy Pancake Day! Squirrels had the best time celebrating Pancake Day. The children learnt that this special day is called Shrove Tuesday and even got to eat their own pancake with their choice of topping!
