This week, for our Understanding the World focus, Nursery Mice have been learning about "Brrr, its chilly." Children have explored the story text ‘Stick Man’ by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler.
Using their Communication and Language, the children made a prediction about the story from the front cover. They all joined in with the repeated refrains and enjoyed listening and engaging during the whole story. The children spoke about the setting of the story- winter and how the characters are feeling.
"Stickman is sad" - Freddie
"Stickman wants to go to the family tree"- Matilda
"Stickman build a snowman" - Bella
The children went on a winter walk and spoke about the things we may see, do or wear in the winter and how it is different to summer. Afterwards the children enjoyed a delicious hot chocolate and discussed why people usually have hot drinks in the winter- to warm us up!
In Literacy, the children learnt lots of new vocabulary, it was used in our role play area which was an igloo.
Freezing- If water (liquid) is cooled, it changes to ice (solid).
Frost- is made up of tiny crystals of frozen water.
Ice- When liquid water becomes cold enough, it changes into solid water, called ice.
Melting- is a process that occurs when a solid changes into a liquid after heat is applied to it.
The igloo also promoted Physical Development as it increased independence for the children to put on their own coat, using their zip and putting on hats and scarfs- you cant go in an igloo without wrapping up nice and warm!
In Science, children engaged with a science experiment of melting ice using a hair dryer with hot and cold air. They responded verbally from what they saw.
"The cold air won't melt as fast" -Jasmine
"Hot air makes the ice melt"- Vinnie
"It turns to water"- Erica
Our teachers are going to use our 'know more remember more' motto to see if we can remember the definitions- ready to use in our focus topics later in the year!
In the provision the children have engaged with lots of ice and snow activities such as ice and snow painting, making snow in the classroom, ice picking and mark making in the snow and ice! The activities are closely linked to the topic to encourage new vocabulary to be used and to share their own thoughts!
"Ice is slippery" - Erica
"Winter is a season"- Derren
"It's melting" - Barney
"It's freezing"- Isaac
They look forward to using their knowledge and skills learned in upcoming learning, and to build on this independently in the provision.
